Living with Coral in 2019
Pantone’s 2019 Color Of The Year is (drum-roll please) "Living Coral".
Let’s take a quick break from our top 10 trend list to look at the color of the year for 2019. Pantone announced the color this week and it is definitely a step away from the recent past year winners. Take a look at the color of the year – even if its not one that resonates with you - because you are about to see it everywhere!
Pantone is the color company that produces the Pantone Matching System. The system provides a way of standardizing colors to be used across different industries including fashion, home furnishings, industrial packaging, and graphic design. The company conducts an annual wide-ranging analysis of color trends, taking into consideration color trends in many cultures to select one “color of the year” that they feel is emerging in the different areas of color/design.
We in the home furnishings industry will see a stronger tone like this color show up in new fabrics, artwork and accessories.
From A Composition Perspective
Living Coral is not a new one for us here at New Perspective. When I saw the color announcement by Pantone, I immediately thought of two of our recent jobs that use this beauty as the star of the show.
Here is a sun room that pops with a complementary color palette incorporating pale Turquoise with – you guessed it- Living Coral. In a room full of windows where the palette is soft and the green tones transition from outside in, the coral gives a punch of excitement without distracting from the beautiful views.
Another great aspect of Living Coral is its ability to update our Midwestern orangy wood tones without starting over. Wood tones of the past 20 years can tend to throw a bit of a wrench into today's cooler grayer palettes. The color is “bossy” and grabs your attention so when homeowners are transitioning to the current cool colors of today, the orange tones can crash right into the new palette and not always in a good way. When you have something bossy, the key to having it make sense is to repeat it and tie it to something in the new palette. We have the perfect example of this exact situation in a local dental office we just completed. Look at how the big reception desk that did not change in this update is balanced by a small sofa that pulls the warm tone to the opposite side of the room. Our linking piece is that beautiful wallpaper (used sparingly) that introduces all the current cool taupe and gray colors of today along with just a touch of Living Coral.
Are you ready for some new updated color in your interior?
Keep an eye out for this beautiful tone to start showing up in fashion and accessories and think of ways to incorporate it in little doses for a fresh 2019 look. Good interior design requires you to blend what you love and what your space is asking for with what is trending in the market. Tune in next week for a Holiday decorating peek into our own homes – you might be surprised;)
Happy Holidays!
