Taking it to new heights with multi-level furniture
I’ve always been a fan of unique multi-level furniture pieces – especially tables. Years ago, I splurged and bought a coffee table with cute storage ottomans tucked underneath. It’s always a consideration when we start a furniture layout for a family room – how can we get a multi-level usable piece in the space? One of the unexpected trends we saw on our recent trip to market was– multi level tables. What a great way to incorporate different durable surfaces into one piece of furniture!
Hands down the most practical implementation of this concept shows up in end tables and nightstands. These levels provide a great area to charge a laptop or phone while still leaving the right height and spot for a lamp. Not only do these pieces show multi levels but also a variety of finishes. Notice how the furniture makers mix sparkly metals with woods, stone, glass and of course... levels.
From a Composition Perspective
The coffee table above shows a multi- level combination of stone and wood. The different levels make for an interesting piece to anchor any seating arrangement. The levels also help by making this oversize “connecting” piece a focal point adding contrast and movement to the space. Functionally the stone is nice for setting an occasional glass down (maybe even without a coaster).
Finally, below is showing off a fun end table with little end tables underneath – you can pull these out and spread them around when company is in for individual resting spots for each guest. Note the gold finish…we’ll cover that in a future post.
So as you start to update your living space---think beyond the standard occasional table. Keep your eyes open for interesting finishes and levels to bring your space to life, not to mention provide extra functionality.
